The Winter Cup
Single round foursomes stabelford competition.
First contested in 1974, held at RPGC after the AGM. Presented by Mrs John Davies after her husband’s death in 1971. When originally presented it was called The John Davies Cup, changing to its present name in 1976.
The trophy is solid silver, originally forged in 1935, perhaps won in a horse race as his son, Colin Hughes-Davies was a jockey and following this was a successful trainer, having stables in Chepstow.
There looks like engraving on one side of the trophy which has been erased and on the other side of the trophy was added (in 1982) an engraving regarding the Winter Cup. An extra base was attached to the existing base in January 2022 to incorporate all the winners’ names.
